The Palestinian embassy in London was officially inaugurated on Monday with a short ceremony, which its ambassador described as a “profound milestone” in British-Palestinian ties. We gather today to mark an important event the inauguration of the State of Palestine’s embassy in the United Kingdom, with full official status and privileges,” ambassador Husam Zomlot said in a speech outside what was previously known as the Palestinian Mission to the UK in west London.
The mission was officially upgraded to embassy status after the UK said it would recognise the State of Palestine in September 2025, along with several other nations, including Australia and Canada, during a time of widespread international concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Zomlot, wearing a traditional black and white keffiyeh scarf, told the gathering that this is “not merely a change of name,” but a “change of direction” toward Palestinian sovereignty.
What a way to start the new year together, marking a watershed moment in British-Palestinian ties and the Palestinian people’s long struggle for freedom and self-determination,” Zomlot said before unveiling the embassy’s new plaque.
