After talks with its newly appointed finance minister, the IMF announced on Tuesday that it is amenable to a new loan arrangement with Lebanon. After more than two and a half years of caretaker rule, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam created a new cabinet last month. Salutations tapped The finance ministry will be led by Yassine Jaber, a former minister of economy and transport. This is a crucial role as the new government considers whether to enact difficult economic reforms in return for additional funding from the Fund. For years, corruption and poor management have been held responsible for the downfall of Lebanon’s economy.

Regarding President Joseph Aoun, an IMF official said AFP, “We look forward to working with the President and new government in addressing the major challenges that the Lebanese economy faces.

If the authorities ask for it, this may involve talks on a new program that could aid in rehabilitating the economy and restoring external and debt sustainability. The remarks from the IMF come after Jaber met earlier Tuesday with Frederico Lima, the Fund’s resident official in Lebanon.
