Dubai Police have busted a fraud network that allegedly tricked numerous car owners by pretending to be purchasers on a well-known online marketplace and using counterfeit checks to make payments.
In order to complete the ownership transfer and provide a fake cheque, one of the suspects pretended to be a corporate representative, while another member called car vendors to agree on a purchase. Following the completion of the deal, the car was transferred overseas right away using the new (fraudulently acquired) owner’s documentation.
Similar occurrences were reported to the Anti-Fraud Centre of the Criminal Investigation Department, which showed that the gang worked both within and outside of the United Arab Emirates.
To win the victims’ trust, the suspects chose expensive cars that were for sale online and pretended to be agents of respectable organisations. To create a false sense of urgency and legitimacy, they would send an accomplice to the seller’s house to inspect the automobile before scheduling the final transaction for late at night at a vehicle registration office.
The criminal acting would use a copy of the newly registered owner’s passport as the buyer to export the car overseas that same evening after ownership was transferred. Only after the victim tried to cash the check and realised it was a fake would the scam be exposed.
