A baby girl died from exposure as a result of the torrential rain that swept through the Gaza Strip on Thursday, drowning hundreds of tents housing families displaced by two years of conflict, according to local health officials.
Eight-month-old Rahaf Abu Jazar died from exposure to cold, according to medical professionals, after water flooded her family’s tent in Khan Younis, in the enclave’s southern region. Hejar Abu Jazar, Rahaf’s mother, sobbed as she held the girl in her arms and claimed to have fed her before they went to bed.
Once we woke up, we found the rain over her and the chill on her, and the girl died of cold suddenly,” she stated to Reuters. She had something wrong with her. “Oh, my life, the fire in my heart, the fire in my heart,” she sobbed.
Fuel shortages and equipment damage, according to municipal and civil defense officials, prevented them from handling the storm. They claimed that during the conflict, which forced the majority of Gaza’s more than two million residents to flee and left much of the region in ruins, Israel destroyed hundreds of vehicles, including bulldozers and other equipment used to pump water.
