The Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, was present at the annual event of the University of Sharjah (UoS) Alumni Association on Saturday night. The event was held at Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology in University City.
Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed welcomed the guests and graduates in his speech, highlighting the importance of this prestigious scientific and social event that brings together alumni from different cohorts and fields as they return to their alma institution each year.
He told the tale of the famous optics scholar Ibn Al Haytham, who attended the House of Wisdom in Baghdad before traveling to Egypt, where he attained international acclaim and rose to prominence as a symbol of superior science. Ibn Al Haytham eventually went back to Baghdad in spite of his achievements. He said, “I return to give back some of what I have learned,” in response to the question of why he returned at the height of his success. I go back to teaching the way I was taught. He made knowledge a constant, enduring commitment by deciding to devote his last years to teaching and mentoring young people.
