In support of UN Palestinian human rights specialist Francesca Albanese, who is being pressured to step down over remarks she made regarding the war in Gaza, more than a hundred prominent figures from the entertainment industry signed an open letter on Saturday.
Albanese’s comments this weekend, in which she referred to a “common enemy of humanity” after accusing “most of the world” and the media of supporting Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza, have prompted calls for her resignation from France and Germany. The UN Special Rapporteur has been accused by Israel and critics of calling Israel a “common enemy,” but Albanese has called this a “manipulation” and “completely false.”
More than 100 cultural leaders, including British musician Annie Lennox, Nobel-winning author Annie Ernaux, and actors Mark Ruffalo and Javier Bardem, supported her in a letter prepared by the Artists for Palestine group and provided to AFP.
The signatories “offer our full support to Francesca Albanese, a defender of human rights and therefore also of the Palestinian people’s right to exist,” the letter says. We want force to no longer be the law, and there are countless more of us in every part of the world. It ends, “Who knows what the word ‘law’ really means.
