On Monday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer turned off calls to step down, even from the leader of his party in Scotland. This was after a second aide defected from a team that was already in turmoil over the selection of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington. Starmer has tried to modify the story because he is under criticism for the nomination of a man who had close contacts to the late US sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein.

But Anas Sarwar, the head of the Scottish Labour Party, asked him to step down, and a second senior adviser left in as many days. This did little to quell the doubts about his judgement and ability to lead. Tim Allan, the head of communications, quit when Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s closest aide, left. McSweeney stated he was responsible for recommending Mandelson for the highest diplomatic job in the US.

Earlier on Monday, the British leader spoke to colleagues at his Downing Street office to lift their spirits and encourage them to work together. Later, he got words of support from his top ministers and some others who might run against him for leadership.

He addressed them, “We have to show that politics can be a force for good.” He called McSweeney “a friend” who helped reform the Labour Party and win the 2024 national election with one of the biggest parliamentary majorities in modern British history.
