A US submarine fired a torpedo, sinking an Iranian cruiser off the coast of Sri Lanka, where the navy said Wednesday it found 87 bodies and rescued 32 survivors. The Iranian vessel that sank in the Indian Ocean was the Islamic Republic’s “prize ship,” according to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. It was one of the few occasions when a submarine sank a ship since World War II.
The sinking of the IRIS Dena represents a US-Israeli military operation against Iran that extends beyond its boundaries. According to US President Donald Trump, one of the war’s main goals is to destroy Iran’s navy. During a Pentagon news briefing, Hegseth stated that an American submarine sank an Iranian cruiser that was believed to be secure in international waters. “Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo.
After receiving a distress signal from the IRIS Dena, which had 180 passengers on board, Sri Lanka’s navy dispatched ships and planes on a rescue effort, the country’s foreign minister, Vijitha Herath, informed Parliament.
However, by the time Sri Lanka’s navy arrived, there was no indication of the ship, “only some oil patches and life rafts,” according to navy spokesman Commander Buddhika Sampath. “We found people floating on the water.
