Hours after the Spanish prime minister declared that his government would not “be complicit in something that is bad for the world,” President Donald Trump threatened to cut off trade with Madrid. The White House announced on Wednesday that Spain has agreed to cooperate with US operations in the Middle East.

I think they heard the president’s message yesterday loud and clear,” stated White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. According to what I’ve been told over the last few hours, they’ve also committed to work with the US military,” Leavitt stated. “And so I know that the US military is coordinating with their counterparts in Spain.”

Immediately following Leavitt’s comments, the Associated Press was trying to reach the Spanish government for comment. A day after Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares declared that his nation would not permit the US to utilize jointly operated facilities in southern Spain in any strikes not protected by the UN charter, Trump announced on Tuesday that he would “cut off all trade with Spain.”

A few hours prior to Leavitt’s remarks on Wednesday, Pedro Sánchez, the prime minister of Spain, once more denounced the US and Israel’s military operations in Iran, reiterating his opposition to Washington’s economic threats and cautioning that the Middle East conflict posed a risk of “playing Russian roulette” with millions of lives.
