Since its inception in May 2021, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) Green Hydrogen project has generated over 100 tons of green hydrogen, according to Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA. The majority of this was used to assist abate more than 515 tonnes of carbon dioxide by generating more than 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean power using a hydrogen gas engine. In order to power various industrial applications and fuel hydrogen cars at ENOC’s Service Station of the Future at Expo 2020 Dubai, more than 11 tonnes were supplied to ENOC.
In order to strengthen the UAE’s competitive advantages in the hydrogen industry, the Green Hydrogen initiative supports the long-term goals of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. By supporting the National Hydrogen Strategy, the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, the initiative strengthens DEWA’s efforts to generate all of the energy by 2050 from clean sources.
In keeping with the emirate’s strategic goals to lower greenhouse gas emissions and enhance air quality, it also supports the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which seeks to promote the use of sustainable transportation, according to Al Tayer.
