According to a statement posted on her Instagram on Wednesday, British novelist Sophie Kinsella, author of the best-selling Shopaholic series, passed away at 55 from illness. Kinsella, whose real name was Madeleine Wickham, sold more than 50 million copies worldwide, including a well-known series that chronicled the lives of a fictional London shopper. A movie was eventually made based on several of the Shopaholic novels.

In 2022, the author received a diagnosis of glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer. “She died calmly, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and comfort and Christmas and joy,” the statement read.

Sophie considered herself extremely fortunate to have such a fantastic family and friends, as well as to have experienced the remarkable success of her literary career, despite her sickness, which she endured with unfathomable bravery.”

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie, aka Maddy, aka Mummy,  the family wrote in a statement posted on Kinsella’s Instagram account. Her final days were spent with her true love’s family, music, warmth, Christmas, and joy, and she passed away quietly.
