According to a source with knowledge of the preparations, Saudi Arabia will organise a conference on February 20 with the presidents of four Arab nations to discuss Donald Trump’s plan for a US invasion of Gaza.

The summit will take place ahead of an Arab League conference on the same issue in Cairo on February 27 and will be attended by the leaders of the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, and Qatar, according to the source.

Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, would also be present, according to a second source who spoke on condition of anonymity. Trump’s suggestion that the US annex the Gaza Strip and expel over two million Palestinians, citing Egypt or Jordan as justifications, caused a worldwide uproar.

In comments that were denounced by the Arab world but were described as a joke by certain Israeli media, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has since implied that Saudi Arabia may also accept Palestinians. The Arab nations have united in their concern at the prospect of mass displacement of Palestinians.

Any forced relocation reminds Palestinians of the ‘Nakba,’ or disaster, which was the wholesale exodus of their forefathers during the establishment of Israel in 1948. However, if Jordan and Egypt, long-time friends, don’t join, Trump has threatened to cut off a key aid lifeline. Over two million Palestinian refugees already call Jordan home. Over half of the 11 million people that live there are Palestinian.
