The Ihram, a key piece of clothing for male worshippers, continues to represent commitment, unity, and purity as the Month of Blessings, Ramadan, approaches and millions of Muslims from all over the world undertake Umrah. A key component of the Umrah and Hajj experience is the basic white clothing, which is made up of two pieces of unstitched fabric.
The Sustainable Ihram program was launched by the Fashion Commission of the Saudi Ministry of Culture to encourage sustainability. According to media on Sunday, this effort combines eco-friendly solutions meant to protect the environment with revered Islamic customs by recycling and reusing discarded Ihrams.
The program uses a circular textile recycling method to gather worn Ihrams and turn them into new, eco-friendly clothing. The Saudi Investment Recycling Co. and the eco-fashion brand Tadweem are partners in this creative endeavor.
The initiative supports the growth of a circular textile sector in Saudi Arabia and seeks to increase consumer awareness of fashion recycling. The Fashion Commission has seen an opportunity to reduce textile waste by acknowledging the environmental impact of discarded ihrams made in vast quantities for the yearly pilgrimage.
