According to officials and local media, search teams in northern India made an effort on Saturday to free 22 workers who were thought to be trapped after an avalanche struck a remote border area on Friday. The avalanche struck a construction camp close to a village on the Tibetan border in Chamoli district, trapping the workers in snow and debris.
Pushkar Singh Dhami, the state chief minister of Uttarakhand, stated that “relief and rescue operations have been accelerated” as the local weather has improved. In a post on X, Dhami stated, “Every attempt is being made to safely evacuate all the workers trapped in the snow as soon as possible.
Critically injured soldiers underwent life-saving surgery at the location by Army physicians. According to Indian media, people in the Tibet-bordering village of Mana fled to lower elevations to avoid the severe weather, leaving the village abandoned.
In the upper Himalayas, landslides and avalanches are frequent occurrences, particularly in the winter. According to scientists, the combustion of fossil fuels by people is causing climate change, which intensifies weather occurrences due to warmer waters.
