According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with the presidents of Iran and Israel over the phone on Friday, offering to mediate amid widespread protests in Iran that have sparked concerns about a military conflict in the area. The United States, Israel’s main ally, threatened to take military action after Iranian security forces brutally put an end to widespread anti-government demonstrations, killing thousands, according to independent observers.
Israel launched unprecedented attacks on Iranian military and nuclear installations during the brief conflict between Iran and Israel in June. For a limited while, the United States participated in those strikes, targeting three significant nuclear installations in Iran.In an effort to ease tensions between the two adversaries, Russia said on Friday that Putin was in communication with both Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, stated, “The situation in the region is highly tense, and the president continues his efforts to facilitate de-escalation.”
Iran has a close ally in Moscow. Additionally, it has worked to maintain positive relations with Israel, but since October 7, 2023, Russian criticism of Israel’s conduct in Gaza has damaged such relations. The Kremlin said that Russia had stated its “readiness to continue its mediation efforts” during a Friday phone conversation with Netanyahu of Israel. It made no mention of the Iranian protests or what current initiatives were being carried out.
