President of the UAE Pardons Bangladeshis who were Convicted of Inciting Recent Riots

For their role in the protests and disturbances that occurred throughout multiple emirates last month, the president of the United Arab Emirates has issued an order for their pardon. Additionally, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed has given the go-ahead for the administration to arrange for the deportation of those found guilty and to void their sentences.

Following the President’s orders, UAE Attorney-General Dr. Hamad Al Shamsi issued an order to stop the sentences from being implemented and to start the deportation process.

On July 22, 54 Bangladeshis who had served jail sentences related to riots and protests in the Emirates were ordered to be deported, and three Bangladeshis received life sentences.

The trio received a life sentence for organising protests and sparking riots in the United Arab Emirates to exert pressure on their government amid the ongoing unrest surrounding job reservations in Bangladesh. 53 more people were given 10-year sentences by the court, and one defendant received an 11-year sentence for breaking the law by entering the nation and taking part in the “gathering.”

Following the 57 people’s detention and conviction, Bangladeshi embassies in the United Arab Emirates advised their citizens to abide by local laws and refrain from engaging in illicit activities, as doing so could lead to the revocation of their visas, imprisonment, fines, and prohibition.
