After appearing to leave open the option the day before, President Donald Trump gave his assurances on Tuesday that US troops would not be sent to Ukraine to protect against Russia.

In a morning TV interview, Trump also declared that Ukraine’s aspirations to retake the Crimean Peninsula and join NATO are “impossible.”

While acknowledging that the Kremlin leader might not want to strike a deal at all, Trump said on Tuesday that he hoped Russian President Vladimir Putin would take steps to stop the war in Ukraine, adding that this would put Putin in a “tough situation.”

Trump stated in an interview with Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” show that he thought Putin’s strategy would be revealed in the coming weeks.

Moscow does not oppose any formats for negotiating peace in Ukraine, according to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, but any gathering of national leaders “must be prepared with utmost thoroughness,” he said on Tuesday.
