On Saturday night, thousands of demonstrators gathered in Tel Aviv’s streets to protest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal to intensify the conflict in Gaza, which has been going on for almost two years. They called for the captives to be released and for the campaign to cease immediately.
Despite strong public opposition and military warnings that the move could put the hostages in danger, the prime minister’s office said a day earlier that the security cabinet, a small group of senior ministers, had decided to take control of Gaza City, extending military operations in the devastated Palestinian territory.
This is not only a military choice. At the demonstration, Lishay Miran Lavi, the wife of captive Omri Miran, begged U.S. President Donald Trump to step in and put a quick end to the conflict, saying, “It could be a death sentence for the people we love most.
According to public opinion surveys, the vast majority of Israelis support ending the conflict right now in order to ensure the release of the 50 hostages that the Palestinian organization Hamas still holds in Gaza. About 20 captives, according to Israeli sources, are still alive.
