Nepal’s political landscape shifted dramatically on Friday as former chief justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as the country’s new prime minister, taking charge of a transitional government after a wave of deadly anti-corruption protests forced the previous administration to step down.

The 73-year-old Karki, Nepal’s first woman chief justice, took her oath of office before President Ram Chandra Paudel at a brief ceremony inside the presidential palace. “Congratulations! We wish you success, wish the country success,” Paudel told her, as diplomats and former leaders looked on.

Karki’s appointment followed the resignation of the outgoing prime minister earlier in the week after parliament was set on fire amid escalating unrest. Born in 1952 in the industrial town of Biratnagar, eastern Nepal, Karki pursued political science in India before completing her law degree in Kathmandu.

She began practicing law in 1979, gaining recognition as a bold and uncompromising lawyer who often took on difficult cases that others avoided. Her reputation for independence followed her throughout her judiciary career, culminating in her historic role as Nepal’s first woman chief justice.
