Following repeated assertions by US President Donald Trump that he had mediated peace, Prime Minister Narendra Modi denied on Tuesday that any international leader pressured India to cease its war with Pakistan. Before Trump announced a truce between the nuclear-armed neighbors, the antagonistic South Asian nations engaged in a fierce four-day combat in May that claimed over 70 lives on both sides.
During a discussion on “Operation Sindoor,” the military assault against Pakistan that began in May, Modi addressed parliament, “No world leader asked us to stop the operation.” Trump was not mentioned by Modi in his address. The Indian prime minister also asserted that after sensing the “heat of our attacks,” Pakistan begged India to end the conflict.
The violence began in April when gunmen in Indian-administered Kashmir killed 26 individuals, primarily Hindus, in an attack on tourists. Islamabad refuted India’s accusation that Pakistan supported the assailants.
Trump has often said that he mediated a settlement between the adversaries, most notably on Monday. There would be six significant conflicts raging right now if I weren’t here. During his trip to Scotland, Trump declared that India and Pakistan will be at war.
