In the midst of a trade spat with Washington, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the nation on Friday to become more self-sufficient, produce everything from jet engines and EV batteries to fertilizers, and pledge to defend farmers.
Since US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Indian exports are predicted to hinder growth in the major economy with the highest rate of growth in the world, Modi promised reduced goods and services taxes (GST) starting in October, which may increase consumption.
Following a weapon mentioned in Hindu literature, Indian defense and policy circles have colloquially referred to the Russian S-400 air defense system, which was instrumental in the conflict with Pakistan, as the Sudarshan Chakra.
On the nation’s Independence Day, Modi spoke at a time when Trump’s tariffs and the breakdown of trade negotiations, mostly because of disagreements over the importation of American dairy and agricultural products, were plaguing New Delhi. Farmers, fishermen, and cattle rearers are our top priorities,” Modi said during his yearly speech outside the Red Fort’s ramparts in New Delhi.
