We recently had the opportunity to interview Payal K Bhatia, Executive Director for MEA at Robbert Murray & Associates Middle East. With years of expertise in delivering technical and support staff to top Engineering and energy companies in the MENA Region & Asia, Payal also holds over 20 years of experience in recruiting Emirati and international talent for C-Suite roles.
In her current organization, Payal leads a business focused on helping organizations realize their potential by connecting them with exceptional talent. In this interview, Payal shares the beginning of her career, her journey over these years, and visions regarding the industry, and offers suggestions for aspiring beginners.
Early Life And Educational Background
We started the interview by asking, “How did you get started, and what led you to where you are today?”
Payal K Bhatia shared, “My journey into the world of recruitment began with my first job in the telecom industry, where I was hired and recruited for some of the technical positions. While these roles were not particularly glamorous, they sharpened my ability to delve into the depth of knowledge candidates possess.
Early in my career, within fast-paced corporate environments, I witnessed how the right talent could drive organizations forward, while mismatched hires could stall progress. These experiences ignited a vision: to create a platform that doesn’t just fill positions but fosters growth and innovation by aligning exceptional talent with forward-thinking organizations.
The vibrant and ever-evolving GCC market provided the ideal canvas for this vision, compelling me to do much more by being on the other side of the desk, being with an agency with its dynamic industries and boundless opportunities. Today, Robbert Murray & Associates stands as a testament to this purpose, serving as a trusted partner in shaping careers, empowering businesses, and redefining recruitment as a driver of meaningful success.”
More About Payal K Bhatia Role
We asked, “Can you share more about your current role and the business you lead? What are the core services or products you provide?”
“As the Director of Executive Search & Staffing Solutions for AMEA at Robbert Murray & Associates, I see my role as a bridge between ambition and achievement. I lead a business focused on helping organizations realize their potential by connecting them with exceptional talent. At the core of what we do is executive search—finding leaders who can transform vision into reality—and tailored staffing solutions that empower businesses to scale and adapt in an ever-changing landscape.
For me, it’s more than just filling roles; it’s about understanding the aspirations of both clients and candidates and aligning them for mutual success. Every partnership we build reflects our commitment to creating meaningful impact, one strategic match at a time.” Payal added.
Adaptability Amidst Challenges
Challenges are an inevitable part of every business journey. So, we asked, “What challenges have you faced as a business leader, and how have you overcome them?”
Payal K Bhatia reflected, “As a business leader, one of the less-discussed challenges I’ve faced is managing the emotional complexities that come with connecting talent to opportunity. Behind every executive search or staffing solution, there are people—leaders with aspirations, teams counting on the right hire, and candidates taking life-changing steps in their careers. Balancing these human elements with the analytical rigor required in this field can be a delicate task.
Overcoming this challenge has required a deep commitment to empathy and active ‘listening.’ It’s about understanding not just the business goals of our clients but also the personal goals of the individuals we place. By cultivating a culture that values emotional intelligence and aligning our processes with purpose-driven outcomes, I’ve been able to navigate these complexities and foster relationships that go beyond transactions—relationships built on trust, understanding, and shared success.”
Impact Of AI- Transforming Industries
We further asked, “How do you see technology, especially AI, impacting your industry? Are there any innovative practices you’re implementing?”
“I see AI as a fantastic tool that helps with the more routine aspects of recruitment, like screening for experience, industry knowledge, and scheduling interviews. It’s great for efficiency, but for me, recruitment has always been about more than just processes. It’s about truly understanding a candidate’s potential, emotional intelligence, and what makes them a good fit for an organization. For me, technology enhances the process, but it’s the human insight that truly brings it to life.” She added.
Evolution Of The Future Of Recruitment
To understand Payal’s perspective on the future of her industry, we asked, “What are your views on the future of the industry you’re associated with?”
Payal K Bhatia responded, “The future of recruitment isn’t just about filling jobs—it’s about shaping the workforce of tomorrow. We’re entering a time where talent acquisition will need to be more proactive and strategic, anticipating the skills and leadership needed not just for today, but for the challenges of the next decade.
I see the industry evolving into a more consultative and dynamic space, where recruiters act as trusted advisors, helping organizations navigate complex talent landscapes and align their workforce strategies with long-term business goals. The future, in my view, is about talent being seen as a key driver of innovation, with recruiters acting as architects of future success rather than just facilitators of immediate placements.”
Message To Beginners
Aspiring professionals in Payal’s field will find it extremely helpful to hear from an industry expert like her. So, we asked, “What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs or leaders looking to make an impact in your industry?”
Payal K Bhatia shared, “If I could offer advice to aspiring entrepreneurs or leaders looking to make an impact in recruitment, it would be to embrace the power of both patience and curiosity. In this industry, success doesn’t happen overnight—it’s about continuously learning, adapting, and evolving with both the market and people. There’s a tendency to rush into new trends or technologies, but the real value comes from taking the time to truly understand the needs of both clients and candidates on a deeper level and focus on relationship management.”
The Art Of Balancing Personal-Professional Life
We ended the interview by asking, “How do you maintain a work-life balance while managing a business?”
“For me, maintaining a work-life balance while managing a business comes down to one thing: being intentional about where my energy goes. There was a time when I thought being constantly “on” was a sign of commitment, but I’ve learned that true leadership isn’t about burning out—it’s about pacing yourself. It’s an ongoing conversation I have with myself about how I feel today, what I need at this moment, and how I can adjust accordingly. The business will always need attention, but I’ve learned that I can’t be a great leader if I’m not first taking care of myself and being there for my family and friends.” Payal concluded.
