Gareth Hazelden’s Leadership Approach
We started the interview by asking, “How do you define discipline, and how has it shaped your leadership at Atlantic Capital Markets?”
Gareth shared, “For me, discipline means doing the work even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. It’s a standard I hold myself to in training, leadership, and how I manage clients’ money. I train twice a day, even when I’m travelling and living out of hotels or Airbnbs in Dubai.
One example of how this filters into our culture is a new recruit who originally laughed about fitness and didn’t see the point of it. A few months of being around our environment, and she now trains regularly, eats clean, and takes her health seriously. When discipline is lived, not preached, people naturally raise their standards.”
Connecting Well-being with Decision-making
To learn more about Gareth Hazelden’s perspective on the impact of stress on well-being, we asked, “Have you noticed a direct link between physical well-being and decision-making under pressure?”
He reflected, “Absolutely. When you’re physically sharp, you think more clearly, stay calmer, and make better decisions. I’m 47 now, but I got back into combat sports at 42 — MMA, Muay Thai, boxing, and BJJ. It pushed me far outside my comfort zone, but the mental resilience it built has been invaluable. If you can stay composed when someone is trying to choke you, you can stay composed through market volatility and leadership pressure.”
Fostering Discipline within the Team
An effective team is the backbone of success for any business. So, we asked, “How do you encourage discipline and well-being within your team or company culture?”
“I believe culture is created by what you consistently demonstrate. I pay for staff gym memberships so well-being is accessible to everyone. I openly share my own routines — training, diet, and the supplements I use for longevity. I’m also clear with the team: ‘Being drunk at the pub isn’t how you look after clients’ money.’

Building Routine for Success
We then asked, “What role does routine play in maintaining consistency during volatile or stressful periods?”
He mentioned, “Routine is my anchor. Markets move fast and pressure can spike without warning, but my routine keeps me stable and consistent.
Two training sessions a day, healthy eating 13 days out of 14, supplements, recovery work, and daily learning — these don’t change, even when I’m travelling. I’ve spent a lot of time in Dubai this year, and regardless of where I’ve stayed, the routine remains the same. Structure creates reliability.”
Lessons Learnt in the Process
Intrigued to learn more about the biggest lessons Gareth Hazelden has learned about the connection between health, mindset, and business success, we asked him to share the same.
He shared, “Your health is your competitive advantage. When your body is optimised, your mind performs better — improved energy, clarity, and decision-making.
Some personal lessons I learnt over the years include that sleep is my weak spot. If I get 7 hours, that’s a good night — usually it’s 5–7 — but I still train daily. Also, diet matters, so I eat clean almost every day. Even cutting alcohol has also made a huge difference; I haven’t touched a drop all year.
Moreover, I spent two weeks in Dubai during Ramadan and joined my Muslim friends in fasting, even breaking fast at the Burj Al Arab — a special experience. I’ll be back in Dubai for Ramadan in February and will be doing the full month this time.
Health, mindset, and business performance are deeply connected — discipline in one area strengthens the others.”
