Throughout the month of Ramadan, various volunteer groups work tirelessly around the country to offer iftar meals to blue collar workers. Some work throughout the year to raise cash and plan the campaign, but others have a well-oiled structure in place for years.

For The Giving Family (TGF), planning for the next Ramadan begins as soon as the previous one concludes. “We like to make sure our licences are renewed and we reach out to the kitchens to understand their feedback,” said Zehra Rizvi, one of the initiative’s co-founders. “About four months before the start of Ramadan, we get really busy reaching out to corporations, holding meetings, and spreading the word about the campaign.

TGF was founded by Zehra, Fadie Musallat, and Sabrina Rabhi, and has been feeding approximately 5,000 people every day this Ramadan, with the goal of distributing half a million meals over the course of the month.

The group distributes their meals in an open space in Al Quoz that is accessible to workers from various labor camps. “Dubai Police has allowed us to use this space,” she told us. “It is so large that we can have thousands of labourers line up at the same time, and our volunteers can easily find it.
