A strong earthquake that shook Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand on Friday trapped scores of workers in a fallen skyscraper that was still under construction in Bangkok, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency.
The United States Geological Survey reported that the 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Friday afternoon at a shallow depth northwest of the city of Sagaing. Shortly after, a 6.4-magnitude aftershock struck the same region. According to police and medical officials, 43 people were trapped when a 30-story building that was still under construction fell in the Thai capital.
Social media images revealed that the enormous structure, which was supposed to house government offices, was quickly reduced to a tangle of debris and twisted metal. I heard people calling for help, saying help me,” Bang Sue district deputy police head Worapat Sukthai told AFP when he arrived to check the site.
The number of casualties is still being determined, but we think hundreds of people are hurt,” he stated. When the earthquake occurred, a group of AFP journalists were in Myanmar, across the border, at the National Museum in Naypyidaw.
