During a meeting at the White House on Thursday, Maria Corina Machado, the head of the Venezuelan opposition, presented US President Donald Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize gold in an attempt to influence his attempts to mold the political future of her nation. Trump plans to keep the medal, according to a White House official. “Maria presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done,” Trump tweeted on social media Thursday night. What a lovely expression of respect for one another. Maria, thank you.

According to Machado, who termed the encounter “excellent,” the gift was given in appreciation of his “commitment to the freedom of the Venezuelan people.” Later, a picture of Trump and Machado was released by the White House, with the president holding up a big, gold-colored frame that showed the medal. The gesture was described as a “Personal Symbol of Gratitude on behalf of the Venezuelan People” and the accompanying writing said, “To President Donald J….Trump In Gratitude for Your Extraordinary Leadership in Promoting Peace through Strength.”

After Trump rejected the notion of appointing Machado to succeed the overthrown Nicolas Maduro as leader of Venezuela, Machado made an effort to influence him. Before Machado was given the prize last month, Trump publicly lobbied for it and was furious when he was passed over.
