It seems appropriate that the 18th season of the Indian Premier Global League take on more responsibility and make more important decisions for the future. A few years ago, the IPL considered itself a stand-alone event, launching for two months and then waiting for the following year.
However, in recent seasons, it has been evident that the league, which is by far the most lucrative in cricket, needs more space to expand and cannot be confined to a few months. To feed back into the system and create an IPL and cricket cycle that can continue all year round, the IPL’s stakeholders started establishing bases worldwide and putting the brand in various markets.
However, everything points to the main event, which gets underway in Kolkata on Saturday. We examine some of the key talking topics as the defending champion Kolkata Knight Riders take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens.
Indi is no longer the only place to watch the IPL. With teams in the Caribbean Premier League, South Africa T20, International League T20 in the United Arab Emirates, and Major League Cricket in the United States, the franchises have established themselves in several different regions. More importantly, owners of IPL clubs have purchased various shares in teams participating in England’s Hundred competition, further solidifying the tournament’s control over world cricket, which many already perceive as problematic.
