Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta will build a data center that would be almost the size of Manhattan in order to invest hundreds of billions of dollars on artificial intelligence goods in the near future.

The parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp is one of the major tech companies that have recently made high-profile deals and paid AI researchers multimillions of dollars, some up to $100 million, to expedite work on machines that could outthink humans on a variety of tasks. This concept is known as “super-intelligence” or “artificial general intelligence.

Prometheus, the company’s first multi-gigawatt data center, is anticipated to be online in 2026, while Hyperion, another, will have the capacity to grow to 5 gigawatts in the next years, according to Zuckerberg.

Additionally, he cited a SemiAnalysis analysis that stated Meta was on course to become the first AI lab to bring a gigawatt-plus supercluster online. When investors questioned whether the huge expenditure would be profitable, Zuckerberg cited the company’s main advertising business as a source of strength. Following setbacks for its open-source Llama 4 model and significant personnel departures, the business, which had around to $165 billion in revenue last year, restructured its AI efforts last month under a subsidiary named Superintelligence Labs. The division is speculating that the Meta AI app, image-to-video ad solutions, and smart eyewear may produce new revenue streams.
