On Wednesday, a strong magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia caused 4-meter (13-foot) tsunami waves and prompted evacuation orders around the Pacific. While majority of Japan’s eastern shore, which was ravaged by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in 2011, was urged to evacuate, the shallow earthquake in the isolated Russian region damaged structures and injured a number of people.

As the tsunami drew closer, the U.S. Coast Guard ordered ships out of harbors and advised coastal people in Hawaii to evacuate to high ground or the fourth story or higher of structures. Act now! The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management stated on X that destructive tsunami waves were anticipated.

In a video shared on the Telegram messaging service, Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov stated, “Today’s earthquake was severe and the strongest in decades of tremors.” On Telegram, Russia’s Ministry for Emergency Services said that while most structures survived the earthquake, a kindergarten sustained damage. There have been no recorded fatalities or major injuries.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was located 119 km east-southeast of the 165,000-person city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and was shallow, reaching a depth of 19.3 km (12 miles). It recorded a string of powerful aftershocks up to a magnitude of 6.9 and changed the magnitude from the original 8.0.
