In a joint statement released Thursday, twenty-two nations including major European powers, the UK, Canada, Japan, and Australia called Israel’s approval of a large settlement project in the West Bank “unacceptable and a violation of international law.
Plans for the approximately 12-square-kilometer (five-square-mile) E1 tract of land, located just east of Jerusalem, were approved by Israel on Wednesday.
It is inappropriate and against international law for the Israeli Higher Planning Committee to have approved plans for settlement construction in the E1 area, which is east of Jerusalem. The foreign ministers of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, and Lithuania declared, “We strongly condemn this decision and demand its immediate reversal.
The Israeli people don’t gain anything from this,” the foreign ministers declared. Rather, it puts security at risk, encourages more violence and instability, and moves us farther away from peace. The Israeli government still has a chance to halt the E1 plan’s advancement. We urge them to immediately revoke this plan,” they continued.
