In the UK, there have been protests against the practice of hosting asylum seekers in hotels. In addition to Mold in Wales, Perth in Scotland, and County Antrim in Northern Ireland, protesters also congregated in Bristol, Liverpool, and London in England.

Where anti-racism activists staged counter-demonstrations, police intervened to keep competing groups apart. It follows a High Court decision this week that prohibited a hotel in Epping, Essex, from housing asylum seekers, and other English local authorities announced they were now thinking about filing legal challenges.

For over two hours, police in riot gear and on horseback separated several hundred anti-racism demonstrators from other protesters in Bristol’s Castle Park. Some of the demonstrators pushed against police lines in an effort to pass. Hundreds of anti-immigration activists were outnumbered by them.

According to Bristol City Council, the government’s use of hotels to host asylum seekers in the city is not something the council intends to contest. A 37-year-old lady was taken into custody, according to the police, on suspicion of assaulting an emergency personnel.
