During a public interaction in Mexico City’s historic downtown on Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was touched by a man who appeared intoxicated before a government official intervened. The man, who seemed under the influence of drugs or alcohol, was pulled away by a member of the presidential security detail and was later arrested after reportedly harassing other women in the area.
Despite the man’s behavior, Sheinbaum remained composed, politely agreeing to take a photo with him and gently patting him on the back. A widely circulated video shows the man leaning in for a kiss and touching the president’s body, while she softly pushed his hands away and said, Don’t worry, maintaining a stiff smile.
Sheinbaum later filed a complaint against the man, emphasizing that such harassment is an offense to all women. She expressed concern that if she does not report this crime, it sets a poor precedent for women across the country. The incident has raised questions about the president’s security, as her security detail was not immediately visible during the encounter.
The head of Mexico’s Ministry of Women, established by Sheinbaum, condemned the act and criticised widespread macho attitudes that normalise unwelcome invasions of women’s personal space. This incident underscores a broader issue in Mexico, where approximately 70% of women aged 15 and older experience sexual harassment.
