At least 14 people were killed when a storm caused landslides and torrential rains that flooded many northern Philippine areas overnight into Monday. The storm also forced the government to halt government operations and schooling in the heavily populated capital region.
Hurricane Tropical According to the weather bureau, Yagi intensified as it made landfall in Casiguran town in the northeastern province of Aurora on Monday afternoon, with sustained winds of 85 kph and gusts of 105 kph.
The storm, known locally as Enteng, picked up speed and was travelling at 20 kph northwest towards the provinces that are the furthest north in the nation. The weather bureau said that it was expected to intensify even more, potentially becoming a typhoon, before vanishing towards southern China over the next two days.
At least three people, including a pregnant woman, were killed when a landslip struck two small shanties on a hillside in Antipolo city, in Rizal province, just west of the capital, on Monday. Enrilito Bernardo Jr., Antipolo’s disaster-mitigation officer, told The Associated Press over the phone that four more villagers perished in swollen creeks.
