On Friday, thousands of people gathered in the heart of Beirut to commemorate the 20th anniversary of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri’s assassination. In 2005, the occupying Syrian army withdrew from Lebanon as a result of the protests that followed his murder.

As Lebanese look forward to a better future under a new president and cabinet, the nation is once again at a turning point. Following its conflict with Israel and the overthrow of the Assad government in Syria, Hezbollah has also become weaker.

In the years that followed, Mr. Hariri and other Lebanese leaders were accused of being assassinated by the Iran-backed organisation and the Assad administration. Hezbollah did not like either Prime Minister Nawaf Salam or new President Joseph Aoun. His son, former prime minister Saad Hariri, has also returned to Lebanon in observance of Mr. Hariri’s passing. In 2022, he stepped away from active politics.

Saad was visited by supporters of the Future Movement, a Sunni-led political organisation that Rafic Hariri established, from all throughout the nation. With commando soldiers encircling Mr. Hariri’s grave, the memorial service was held under strict security. Political leaders from all over Lebanon came to offer their respects.
