Authorities said on Tuesday that a large earthquake off the coast of northern Japan had damaged roads, left thousands without electricity in bitter cold, and injured at least 30 people.The magnitude 7.5 earthquake that struck Monday at 11:15 p.m. (1415 GMT) was decreased from 7.6, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, and it increased the likelihood of stronger or comparable earthquakes in the days ahead.

According to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the earthquake off the coast of the Aamori region caused tsunami waves up to 70 centimeters (28 inches) high, injuring 30 people.The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reports that one individual on the major northern island of Hokkaido was critically wounded.

According to an AFP reporter in Hokkaido, inhabitants were alerted by smartphone alarms, and the ground trembled strongly for about 30 seconds. Civil servant Daiki Shimohata, 33, of Hashikami in the Aomori district of Honshu island, told AFP that he and his family hurried outside their house. “We had never felt a tremor like that. It might have lasted for twenty seconds or so, Shimohata stated over the phone.

Following the earthquake, over 28,000 people were told to leave their houses, according to emergency services, and some temporary shelters were reportedly full. In the hours after the earthquake, Kyodo News reported that some 2,700 houses in Aomori were without power due to temperatures near freezing.
