UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged UN Security Council members to put aside differences that impede taking meaningful action towards peace. Guterres urged council members, especially permanent members, to build on the work of the UN General Assembly and the momentum provided by the “Pact for the Future” in order to advance the intergovernmental negotiations during his speech at the UN Security Council’s open debate on maintaining international peace and security: practicing multilateralism, reforming and improving global governance.

The world expects to the Security Council to act in significant manners to end conflicts and relieve the suffering these wars inflict on young people,” he said. Guterres urged the Council to embrace the same cooperative and accommodating mindset that has helped it overcome disagreements and forge the consensus it needs to carry out its peacekeeping mission.

He highlighted that, eight decades after its founding, the United Nations continues to be the unique and vital platform for promoting human rights, sustainable development, and peace. Guterres emphasised that the world faces numerous crises that call for multilateral answers, underscoring the urgent need for solidarity and global solutions.

He cited the “Pact for the Future” adopted by the UN General Assembly in September, which aims to restore faith in multilateralism, the UN, and this Council while also bolstering global governance for the twenty-first century.
