Tanks are approaching as Israel’s forces advanced deeper into Gaza City’s most populous neighborhoods on Tuesday, sending a sobering reminder to Gazans that the establishment of a Palestinian state by Western nations does not eliminate the horrors of war.

After almost two years of conflict that has been met with strong opposition from Israel and its close ally the United States, Israel continued its Gaza attack one day after dozens of world leaders convened at the UN to support a Palestinian state, marking a historic diplomatic change.

Israel claims that the actions will make it more difficult for the battle in the Palestinian enclave, which has been mostly destroyed by Israeli airstrikes and is currently experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe that includes widespread starvation, to end peacefully.

At least 22 individuals were killed by Israeli fire in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, 18 of whom were in Gaza City, according to local health authorities. The Gaza health ministry warned that hospitals in the enclave will run out of fuel in the next few days, putting lives in jeopardy.

We are powerless and not steadfast. We are here because we don’t have the money to travel to the south and we don’t have any assurances that the Israelis won’t bomb us,” Huda, a mother of two from Gaza City, told Reuters using a chat app.
