Four defendants were charged with fraudulently obtaining money from a woman after seducing her with a part-time advertisement via WhatsApp, and the Dubai Public Prosecution referred them to the Misdemeanour Court.
The woman told the authorities that she was then persuaded by the advertisement to send money to them in the hopes of making a quick profit, which she would then have to return numerous times.
It was discovered that the defendants were involved in online fraud. Consequently, the court sentenced the two defendants who showed up for the hearing to three months in prison, with the possibility of deportation after that. Furthermore, the remaining prisoners were given the same sentence in absentia.
Chancellor Nasser Mohammed Al Mamari, Head of Deira Prosecution, who oversaw the interrogation, clarified that the victim’s exploitation by cybercriminals stemmed from the initial offer of a simple position in addition to her current employment.
This would mean interacting with her through WhatsApp, hitting the “like” button on images that the team has chosen, and then getting paid.
When the criminals realised she was looking to make quick money, they tricked her into another scam where they would transfer money from her account to another person so they could make a trade.
