According to state media, Syria’s new president made his first official visit to Qatar on Tuesday. The Gulf state is a major supporter of the new government following the overthrow of long-time leader Bashar Al Assad.
Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani received Syria’s temporary president Ahmed Al Sharaa upon his arrival at Doha’s Hamad International Airport, according to the official Qatar News Agency. The Syrian foreign minister had earlier written on X that he was joining Sharaa on his “first presidential visit to the country that has stood by Syrians from day one and has never abandoned them.”
Following a visit to the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, when they met with President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who reaffirmed his nation’s support for Syria’s rebuilding, Sharaa and Shaibani are travelling to Qatar. The rebel coalition that overthrew Assad on December 8 was led by Hayat Tahrir Al Sham, a faction affiliated with Sharaa.
Numerous nations have backed his new government, notably Arab states and important sponsors Qatar and Turkey. Since assuming office, the new government has been quite active in the diplomatic arena, and Sharaa has travelled to Turkey and several Arab nations.
