The Ministry of Economy has introduced a new roadmap and accelerator that will significantly shorten the time it takes to approve intellectual property (IP) applications in the sustainability and green sectors, which will benefit the UAE community.

According to Dr. Abdel Rehman Al Muaini, assistant under-secretary for the intellectual property sector, Ministry of Economy, “Green Intellectual Property” is part of the ministry’s efforts to support the various sustainability initiatives that the UAE has undertaken, which began with the 2023 COP28 held in Dubai.

We developed an accelerator program to assist any applicant with a patent related to sustainability or green energy. Instead of one or two years, it will take three months, or no more than six months, to approve the application, Al Muaini stated. A committee for the accelerator program can investigate an applicant’s request to waive the fee as well,” he said.

According to Marwa Al Harmoodi, chief innovation manager and IP specialist at the Ministry of Economy, the “Green Intellectual Property” program would promote projects in water, solar, wind, and ocean energy, as well as any other sustainability area. She clarified that educational and research institutions as well as all UAE citizens are welcome to participate.
