In protest of a free trade agreement they believe will lead to unfair competition, French farmers rode tractors into Paris on Thursday morning. In a protest organized by the Rural Confederation union, dozens of tractors came before dawn and cruised through Paris, some arriving at the Arc de Triomphe and others at the Eiffel Tower.
Ludovic Ducloux, co-head of one of the union’s chapters, stated, “We promised to come up to Paris—here we are.” “No To Mercosur” was written on one of them, alluding to a free trade agreement with four countries in South America. The EU-Mercosur agreement would enable the 27-nation bloc to export more automobiles, machinery, wines, and spirits to Latin America while also creating the world’s largest free-trade area.
French farmers demonstrate on the Champs Elysees avenue on Thursday in Paris against the EU’s farming policy, the Mercosur trade partnership with South American nations, and the mass culling of cows mandated to stop the spread of a skin disease
However, farmers worry that a supply of cheaper goods from Brazil, the world’s largest agricultural producer, and its neighbors will undercut them. Bertrand Venteau, head of the Rural Confederation, informed the media that the farmers planned to peacefully protest at important locations in Paris, even if it meant being arrested by the police.
