In honour of the nation’s 54th Eid Al Etihad Day, Dubai-based quilting company Quild has started a community-wide initiative to produce a unique patchwork quilt featuring the UAE flag. Ten quilters and sewing lovers from all over the Emirates collaborated under the direction of Quild founder and quilt artist Farida Talaat to design and create a patchwork quilt using 54 squares or quilt blocks in the colors of the flag: red, green, white, and black.

Each patchwork square, which is made of a different material and has a unique feature inspired by its designer, represents a year of the Union. While some patches are made entirely of cotton or linen, others have different textures, such as old velvet.

Beginning in the summer of 2025, the project took over four months to finish, including concept design, fabric sourcing, stitching, piecing, quilting, border application, and finishing touches. “A quilt is rarely just the sum of its parts, and this quilt represents unity and multiculturalism in patchwork form,” stated Farida Talaat. Each fabric square has a unique color, texture, and backstory, but when they are sewn together out of a love for the United Arab Emirates, the result is something more lovely, robust, and cozy than any one piece would be on its own.
