Though they provided few details and cautioned that the talks still have a long way to go, European officials on Monday applauded what they said were positive developments at Geneva talks on US peace plans perceived as strongly favoring Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
Regarding Sunday’s meeting in Switzerland, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on social media site X, “The negotiations were a step forward, but there are still major issues which remain to be resolved.
The 28-point peace proposal that the US offered last week, which strongly favored Moscow’s demands and caused concern in Kyiv and other European capitals, was discussed during the discussions.
The strategy made Ukraine vulnerable by pressuring it to cede land to Moscow and reduce its army’s size. Although NATO has previously stated that Ukraine is on an “irreversible path” to membership, the plan also asked Europe to pledge that Ukraine will never be welcomed into the military alliance. Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, was going through a difficult time when the peace plan unexpectedly surfaced. The war was less than three months away from its fourth anniversary.
