Despite considering backing Israeli strikes aimed at destroying Tehran’s nuclear capability, European foreign ministers will inform their Iranian counterpart on Friday that the United States is amenable to direct negotiations, officials said ahead of a meeting in Geneva.

Iran must deliver a “clear signal,” two officials told Reuters, adding that pressure is growing on Tehran to agree to strict restrictions on its nuclear program in order to stop the possible creation of an atomic bomb. According to the diplomats, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed his willingness to speak with Tehran directly by speaking with a number of Western peers before the Geneva summit.

President Donald Trump backed ally diplomacy that may get Iran closer to a deal, according to a US official cited by broadcaster CNN, although Washington could not confirm it. Tehran, meanwhile, has stated time and again that it will not engage with the Trump administration unless Israeli strikes discontinue.

The European Union’s foreign policy leader and the E3 (Britain, France, and Germany) ministers were holding separate meetings before their scheduled in-person meetings with Araqchi. We can sit down with the Americans, while the Iranians cannot,” a European diplomat stated. “We will tell them to come back to the platform to talk about the nuclear matter before the worst-case scenario, while expressing our concerns over its ballistic missiles, support to Russia and detention of our citizens.
