While US President Donald Trump stated he was prepared to meet in Davos on his plans to seize the autonomous Danish island, European leaders drew a clear line over Greenland on Tuesday, promising a “unflinching” response to Washington’s threats.

The prime minister of Greenland stated that his small country of 57,000 people had to be ready for military action, while leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the Swiss ski resort united against Trump’s increasingly aggressive America First strategy. The European response was spearheaded by Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, who warned that Trump may send US relations with the EU into a “downward spiral.

Greenland was “imperative” for security, according to Trump’s past claims. He wrote on his Truth Social platform, “Everyone agrees that there can be no going back. With his desire to seize Greenland, the US president has put the transatlantic alliance to the test. He will speak to the annual assembly of world leaders on Wednesday.

Although Washington has stated that any retaliatory tariffs would be “unwise,” Europe is considering countermeasures after he threatened to impose levies on eight European nations. Von der Leyen called the levies a “mistake,” warning the gathering of international business and political leaders that they may set off a chain reaction that would only benefit Europe’s enemies.
