In a dramatic departure from decades of western foreign policy, Britain, Australia, and Canada recognized a Palestinian state on Sunday, which immediately infuriated Israel. As Israel faced intense international pressure over the war in Gaza, which was started almost two years ago by the October 7, 2023, Hamas onslaught, Portugal was also scheduled to recognise Palestinian statehood later Sunday.
At the annual UN General Assembly, which begins Monday in New York, France and other countries are anticipated to follow suit, with Britain and Canada being the first G7 countries to do so. On X, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney tweeted, “Canada acknowledges the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel.
The most powerful western nations have long maintained that statehood should only be granted as part of a negotiated peace agreement with Israel, thus this is a turning point for Palestinians and their decades-old aspirations for it.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, reacted vehemently to the proposal and vowed to oppose it at the UN negotiations, putting those nations at conflict with the US and Israel. The demands for a Palestinian state “would endanger our existence and serve as an absurd reward for terrorism,” Netanyahu stated on Sunday.
