A female European visitor was given a one-month prison term for stealing a designer handbag valued at Dh7,000 from a high-end retail establishment in a Dubai mall. She will be imprisoned and then deported.
Court documents state that the crime, which happened recently, was reported when a watchful store employee observed the purse had vanished not long after a group of five people—four women and one man came into the store pretending to be customers.
Under the guise of enquiring about product prices, the gang allegedly engaged in a discussion with the store clerk. After they departed, the employee became suspicious and looked over the in-store security tape, which revealed the theft in great detail.
In the footage, one of the ladies is seen stealthily taking the expensive purse as the others divert the attention of the employees. The well-planned diversion and quick theft suggest a purposeful act of stealing.
As soon as Dubai Police received the information, they began an investigation. After reviewing the video, a Dubai Police criminal investigation squad located the culprit and took her into custody. The lady confessed to the crime during questioning, claiming that she had stolen the purse when she and her siblings were in the mall. After being submitted to the Misdemeanour Court, she was found guilty of stealing and given a one-month jail sentence, which was followed by her deportation.
