
President Donald Trump’s contentious “One Big Beautiful Bill” was passed by the US Senate, including cuts to social programs such as Medicaid, which would leave 11.8 million people without medical coverage by 2030, and tax incentives for the wealthy.
There was a lengthy 27-hour back and forth, including opposition from Republican senators. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune had to keep a tight ship since he was supporting a measure that had gone through the painstaking process of countless changes, all of which were rejected through a lengthy parliamentary system. Three Republican senators refused to comply.
Lisa Murkowski, a Republican Senator from Alaska, voted for the measure but did not hesitate to express her disapproval and opposition to it. She said, “Let us not kid ourselves. This has been a terrible procedure, a mad dash to reach an artificial deadline that has pushed every boundary of this institution.” She asked the American television news network NBC, “Do I like this bill? No. I understand that in many regions of the country, there are Americans who will not benefit from this measure.
