The office of the Deputy Minister of Interior for Counter-Narcotics said that 29.8 tons of illegal drugs that were collected during a series of operations in the Nangarhar region of eastern Afghanistan were set on fire by Afghan police.

In addition to materials used in drug manufacture, the statement released late Monday stated that 1,442 kg of methamphetamine (ICE), 588 kg of heroin, 15,714 kg of hashish, 460 kg of opium poppy, and other narcotics had been seized, according to Xinhua News Agency.

According to the statement, the contraband was discovered while conducting counter-narcotics operations in Jalalabad city and many other areas of the province.

The announcement stated that 2,586 people were arrested for smuggling, buying, and selling the illegal drugs, and their dossiers were sent to the judiciary for additional inquiry, but it did not provide information on whether the drugs had been found.

It further stated that 5,786 drug addicts in the province have been apprehended by police and taken to treatment facilities. After outlawing drug manufacturing, trafficking, and poppy production in April 2022, the Afghan interim government has pledged to combat the problem until the country is drug-free.
