According to the New York Times on Saturday, Indian authorities have stated that they would continue to buy oil from Russia even if U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to levy fines. Response requests were not immediately answered by the White House, India’s Ministry of External Affairs, or the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

In a post on Truth Social this month, Trump hinted that India will be subject to more sanctions for its purchases of Russian energy and weapons. He subsequently stated, though, that he didn’t give a damn about India’s actions toward Russia. Trump informed reporters on Friday that he discovered that India will no longer purchase Russian oil.

According to the NYT story, two senior Indian officials stated that there had been no change in policy. One official also stated that the government had “not given any direction to oil companies” to reduce imports from Russia. As July discounts dwindled, Indian state refiners had ceased purchasing Russian oil during the last week, according to a previous report by Reuters.

Trump vowed to impose 100% tariffs on nations that purchase Russian oil on July 14 unless Moscow and Ukraine could achieve a significant peace agreement. About 35% of India’s total supply comes from Russia, making it the country’s largest supplier.
